Bright Adriatic sunlight streams in slanted loft windows high above Trieste, a shimmer reflects off sea ripples, sailboats bob in gentle swells; its a beautiful day — until I turn on the laptop to read today's news. Fear mongering seems to be a constant media theme, powerful ruling elites of supposed democracies preach control over the multitudes, threatening violent retribution to any challenges to their power, at home or abroad. Gunboat diplomacy worked in the 19th century, still dominated the 20th, and now continues into the 21st century. What happened to the Peace Dividend we were supposed to receive with the end of the cold war? Now its asymmetrical warfare, a few tribesmen or religious fanatics with primitive weaponry, but no fear of death, challenging superpower technologies. Meanwhile global turbo-capitalism, having sucked up any wealth and property the multitudes may have acquired, and bled governments to pay for their speculative ventures that robbed societies and whole nations of prosperity, surges on.
It is not just any one particular place that stews in discontent, increasing impoverishment and hopelessness for rescue of viable options for sustainable socio-economic futures lived within stable ecosystems, it is global.
